Having met your guide at the Private Tours meeting point inside the port just outside the cruise terminal, you will be part of our small and intimate tour through the capital city of New Zealand, affectionately know as "coolest little capital in the world" by the locals and by some as "the windy city" and you may find out why.
Our first stop is the beautiful Old St Pauls Cathedral, Wellington's oldest church and made entirely from native timbers. Here you will have a short introduction to its history by one of the volunteers.
We continue through the heart of the city and along Oriental Parade, past stunning waterfront homes built into the steep hillside, before we head up to Mount Victoria. Our smaller vehicle allows us to cut through the steep and winding streets to the summit.
After time at the top of Mount Victoria taking in the 360 degree views of the city we head out to the Miramar Peninsula for the harbour side drive to the Port Lighthouse and around the coast, passing the many rocky bays and interesting waterfront properties along the way. Watch out for the seals who sometimes play on the rocks.
Wellington is famous for its film industry, notably the Lord of The Rings and Hobbit movies, and our usual lunch venue, the Art Deco Roxy Cinema at Miramar owes its recent restoration and rejuvenation to the support of many of our film industry stars, such as Tania Rodger and Jamie Selkirk. The Coco cafe and restaurant has options to suit all budgets.
Following lunch [your cost] we take a short drive to Weta Cave, here you will be able to see some of the props used in the movies and have a look around the retail shop for souvenirs if you wish.
Departing Weta Cave we head back into the city to see many other landmarks before arriving at the iconic cable car in down town Wellington. Your tour includes the ride up the steep cable railway to the top station where you will have a little time to look around the cable car museum and take photos from the viewpoints.
We then head back to the cruise ship to complete the tour, but if you want we can leave you at the Te Papa National Museum where you can look around for 90 minutes or so, we will return later to collect you for the transfer back to the ship in good time for its departure.
Please note that the order of the tour may vary depending on the weather conditions and traffic issues.
- Air conditioned minibus
- Collection and return to the cruise ship
- Experienced driver/guide
- One way cable car ride
- Lunch is not included, but we do visit the iconic Roxy Cinema or other cafe where you can buy lunch if required.
- If the ships time in port does not match the tour start and end times then we will adjust these to suit.
- The usual tour start time is at 9.30am but on some days the ships arrive or depart at different times, so on these days the tour times will be changed to suit and this will be confirmed on your booking voucher.
- Children under 4 are carried free of charge but will have to sit on a parents lap if there are no spare seats. To guarantee a seat for an infant you will need to purchase a child rate ticket.
- At the end of the tour we can drop you at Te Papa where you can visit the museum and we will return at an agreed time [usually 4pm] for a transfer back to the ship.
- If you like this tour itinerary but have a group larger then 12 persons then please contact us for a quotation.

The child rate is 4 to 14 years, are those under 4 free of charge?
Children under 4 are free of charge if they sit on an adults lap, if a seat is required then a child rate ticket must be booked to guarantee a place.
Is there an entry charge for the Te Papa National Museum?
No, the museum is free of charge, though a small donation would be appreciated if you have enjoyed your experience. Some special exhibitions do require an entry ticket though.
How long do we have at Te Papa if we get dropped off there?
We normally allow about 90 minutes, but you will be advised by the guide on the day of the meeting point and time, if you are not at the meeting points then you will need to make your own way back to the ship [a taxi will be less than $20].
You only offer 12 paces on this tour but our group is larger, can you help.
The Highlights tours are limited to 12 persons or less as this is the size of minibus we operate and it suits the itinerary we offer. If you have more in your party then please contact us as we will be able to organise a special tour for you in most cases.
