An early start is needed for this full day program. We head first to the Kaimai mountain range that is the barrier between the coastal Bay of Plenty and the rich farm land of the central Waikato district.
Climbing to over 1000 feet, we have great views across the lush plains, the power house of the New Zealand dairy industry.
We travel alongside the longest river in New Zealand, the Waikato, then through the charming town of Cambridge, famous as the heart of the bloodstock industry and many renowned stables.
Arriving at Waitomo, we have a short break for coffee before descending into the caves, first to see many of the huge caverns which were formed over many millions of years in the soft limestone. Then we board the boats for a cruise through the flooded caves to see the Glow Worms hanging from the cave roofs like stars in the sky.
Next its back into the coach for the drive back east, passing alongside many rivers and lakes, through the lush farmland of the Waikato region.
Arriving at Hobbiton, the movie set location for the village in the Lord of The Rings and Hobbit films, we will be met by Hobbit guide for an informative tour around the movie set. Stand under the party tree, walk past the Hobbit holes, imagine yourself amongst the characters. Nestled deep in the rolling hills of the Waikato, this location was chosen for it unblemished landscape.
Following the tour we end at the Green Dragon Pub, where you will receive a complimentary glass of Hobbit Ale or Cider. Chance to buy a snack if you wish.
We then start the journey back to Tauranga, stopping at the summit of the Kaimai ranges at over 1000ft above sea level for some great photo opportunities overlooking the valley far below and extinct Volcanoes in the distance.
Time permitting we also stop at a local honey centre to see the hives and taste some of the special local Manuka honey, and perhaps indulge in a tasty honey ice cream.
Finally we return to the ship, passing millionaires waterfront homes lining the beautiful golden sand beaches of Mount Maunganui.

Why is there a charge for infants up to the age of 3 years old.
We give parents the option to purchase an "infant" ticket as this then reserves a seat on the vehicle for the infant. If a ticket is not purchased then the infant may have to sit on their parents lap. If you have a suitable baby or infant seat, then this can be used, or you may be able to hire one from us. It is the parents choice as to how their children travel on our coaches and minibuses.
Is there much walking?
This tour at Hobbiton includes walking, with some inclines and steps on unformed paths. At Waitomo there are a number of stairs to get down into the caves.
Is lunch included?
No meals are included in this tour but time is allowed to buy lunch at a suitable cafe, and we have a coffee stop when we arrive at Waitomo [your cost] After the Hobbiton Tour there is also time for a snack at the Green Dragon Pub, plus the complimentary glass of Hobbit Ale or Cider.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes - they will enjoy visiting the film sets and the glow worm caves.
What happens if the ship arrives late?
If the ship arrives after 0800 then the tour will begin 30 minutes after arrival, or as soon as passengers can depart. Should the ship leave earlier than 60 minutes after the tour is due to end we may shorten the tour.
Our group is larger than 24 persons, can you do larger groups?
Yes we can do larger groups if needed. We have only listed rates for group up to 24 on most of our tours as above that number we need to quote specifically for each group. Just contact us with your requirements and we will be happy to assist.
