We meet you at the main Port Gates, just a few minutes walk from the ship and begin with a drive through the beach suburb of Mount Maunganui, past the millionaires homes and the stunning golden beaches before heading inland towards Rotorua.
Passing first through Te Puke, the home of Kiwifruit, we stop at Kiwi360, a showcase of the Kiwifruit industry, where we take a short tour through this working orchard, after which we can taste some products from this iconic plant. Our route then continues through farmland, native bush and forested areas, past Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotorua before arriving at Rotorua.
Our destination in Rotorua is Te Puia, the home of the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and the location of the famous Pohutu geyser.
Here we will be met by our Maori guide and taken first to Te Paori [dining room] to select our choice of food for the Hangi steambox lunch.
Next we have a short hands on Flax weaving workshop, chance for you to see just how hard this still used skill actually is.
A Maori Cultural performance is then given on the Marae, chance to see some of the fighting skills, plus songs and dances of New Zealands native peoples.
We then head down into the geothermal valley to see the geysers and the reveal of your steambox lunch, which is then enjoyed at a reserved seating area close to the geysers. Your lunch is cooked over a natural steam vent (95C) as the maori have done for centuries.
You will also have chance to see New Zealand's iconic flightless bird, the Kiwi in a purpose built Kiwi-house.
Leaving Te Puia, we travel into the city to see some of the main sights of this historic city. Time permitting we will show you the Government Gardens, Rotorua Bath House and Museum, The Blue Baths, Rachel's Pool and the Te Arawa waka on the lake front drive.
We then depart Rotorua and return to Tauranga by an alternative scenic route over the hills and through steep gorges.
