You will see

  • Blue Baths and Rachels pool
  • Geysers and mud pools
  • Government gardens Bath House
  • Great scenery
  • Hells Gate and Te Puia
  • Kiwifruit orchards
  • New Zealand Kiwi bird
  • Rotorua City and Lake
  • Wood carving and Flax weaving

Leaving the ship which is berthed at Mount Maunganui, we first cross the harbour bridge to Tauranga City and take the inland direct route to Rotorua. This old drovers road takes us through deep gorges, native and plantation forests and farmland, so you have great scenery to enjoy on the way.

Arriving in Rotorua, we first spend time seeing the main sights of this very interesting city, such as the Government Gardens, the Bath House, Blue Baths and the Rotorua lakefront before heading to Te Puia, the home of the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and the location of the famous Pohutu Geyser.

Here we can visit the carving school and see craftsmen fashion traditional wood carvings and watch the Maori women demonstrate flax weaving. We take a short walk through the geothermal valley of Whakarewarewa to view the mud pools, the famous Pohutu Geyser and hot pools that make Te Puia such a unique destination. There is also chance to see New Zealand's iconic flightless bird, the Kiwi in a purpose built Kiwi-house.

Our tour includes a Maori Cultural Performance on the Marae. Here you will be greeted onto the Marae grounds following the challenge by warriors before taking your seats for the concert inside the meeting house. You will see the traditional songs, dances and demonstrations of fighting skills [including the famous Haka].

We have time at Te Puia to enjoy lunch [choice of options, your cost] before we continue to the next destination, Hells Gate, which is a place of extreme contrasts, including the largest hot waterfall in the southern hemisphere. We will be able to see steaming fumaroles and pools of boiling mud as we stroll through this geothermal landscape.

You do have the option to try mud bathing here, either as an alternative to the geothermal valley walk, or time permitting, as an additional activity. Extra charges will apply and its best to pre-book this option if required with us, see the links in the "Options" section in the Summary Tab or check out the "Experiences" tab on the port page.

Departing Hells Gate our drive back to the ship along the coastal route takes us past the extensive Kiwifruit orchards that are such an important aspect of the regions economy.

Our tour today concludes when your personal guide farewells you at the port gates in good time for the ships departure.

If you would to do this tour as an "Exclusive" tour then see the "Groups" tab and tour code TRG-G4.

Is the cost of the mud bath included?

No, we only include entry to the Hells Gate geothermal site. If you want to take a mud bathing option, then you can pay on the day the additional fee for a public area or private spa area mud bath.

Can I do the mud bathing at Hells Gate and take the tour there?

If your group want to add in the mud bathing then this is possible, either instead of the general tour or in addition. There is an additional charge for mud bathing.

I see that no meals are included in this tour, can I buy something?

While we do not include any meals in the tour there are cafes at both Te Puia and Hells Gate. We also have some time around lunchtime in the city where you can also buy a snack lunch if required.

Is this tour suitable for wheelchair users?

If you are able to board a small coach or minibus with assistance then we are happy to store any folding wheelchair in the vehicle. The destinations have well made paths suitable for wheelchairs.

Why is there a charge for infants up to the age of 3 years old.

We give parents the option to purchase an "infant" ticket as this then reserves a seat on the vehicle for the infant. If a ticket is not purchased then the infant may have to sit on their parents lap. If you have a suitable baby or infant seat, then this can be used, or you may be able to hire one from us. It is the parents choice as to how their children travel on our coaches and minibuses.

Can we have a traditional Hangi Lunch at Te Puia on this tour?

Yes this is possible, but due to the high demand and limited availability you will need to book this when you book this tour. You can do this on the "tickets" tab for the Tauranga/Rotorua ports of call page. Its at the bottom of the page and its code is TRG-T998, the cost is $17 NZ per person, be warned - the portions are large!

What if our ship time does not match the tour times?

When a ship is arriving or departing at times that do not suit our normal tour times, then we adjust these times to suit. These adjusted times are shown on your voucher when you make a booking and also on the "prices" tab of the tour details on the web site, if you have created a "my cruise" account.

Is it possible to book a private version of this tour for our group?

Yes,you can see the "Groups" tab on the Tauranga/Rotorua page and tour code TRG-G4 is the group version. You will need to contact us for a quotation as the price will depend on how many persons in your group.
