Departing Mount Maunganui we travel over the harbour and north towards Waihi, New Zealand's heart of gold. On the way we pass through the extensive Kiwifruit and Avocado orchards and the mural town of Katikati.
Arriving in the historic town of Waihi, we first take morning tea at one of the original 1800s hotels of the gold rush period, the Sterling Hotel.
Our specialist goldfields guide then joins us for an introduction to Waihi's gold story, followed by a tour to the historic Cornish Pumphouse, to learn why and how this huge building arrived at its current location.
Next its into the heart of the mine, exclusively we are allowed into the operational area still being worked for gold and silver today. Travelling to view the huge open pit Martha mine, the work area of the current tunnelling operation and finally to the Tailings dam to see how the effect of such a huge mine is being mitigated by careful planning and ecological sensitivity.
A short coach ride then takes us to the historic Waikino Station in the spectacular Karangahake Gorge, the site of New Zealand's only gold rush. once the location for one of the most intensively mined areas of New Zealand. Board the Goldfield's Heritage Train for the journey back to Waihi with a light lunch provided on board.
Our final part of the tour is at the Gold Discovery Centre, a multi million pound, award winning interactive exhibition that takes you back in time to the first prospectors, the local history and up to date with the current plans for the mine and the town of Waihi.
