From Cruise Port:    Dunedin

The tour begins when we meet you close to the cruise ship - the tour vehicles are just a few minutes walk from the gangway in the 'Private Tours' area.

Your first destination is a visit to Baldwin Street - the steepest street in the world, where you have the opportunity to walk up if you are feeling energetic. Then it's on to the Otago University - an architectural masterpiece, which after the Dunedin Railway Station, is one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand. Both the interior and exterior will amaze you.

Following this, we cross the city out to the Otago Peninsula as we embark on a journey that will bring you closer to nature than you could ever imagine.

First stop here is Larnach Castle, to see the wonderful gardens, views and bird life. Your guide will introduce many of the native plants to you as you tour the extensive grounds. You also have an option to go inside the castle to view the formal rooms of this, the only castle in New Zealand (additional cost of $20 per adult and $6 per child). You also have an opportunity to purchase some lunch here in the castle ballroom.

After this we will explore the most scenic areas of the Peninsula including the tidal inlets where many species of waders and waterfowl can be seen. We travel along the narrow gravel roads and give you the chance to take magical photographs. Some of the birds travel thousands of kilometres to enjoy the abundant food present in these inlets.

The highlight for many is a visit to the Yellow-Eyed Penguin reserve where you will get up close to the Yellow-Eyed Penguin. The tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours. It does require some walking up and down slopes and steps, so bring comfortable walking shoes.

Then to the only mainland breeding colony of the Royal Albatross at the tip of the peninsula where we hope to see these wonderful birds fly. Here, at the Albatross Centre we can learn more about the amazing birds and we should also be able to see these magnificent birds as they swoop and fly in the winds over the headland.

We then return you to the Cruise ship along the scenic roads of the Otago Peninsula, back through Dunedin City and then out to Port Chalmers along the harbour-side road in good time to board the ship before departure.

Will we be guaranteed to see the wildlife?

Like all wildlife tours there can never be a 100% guarantee that you will see the wildlife. Penguins, Seals and Albatross have seasonal times when they are sometimes difficult to see, but on most tours you should see a least a few of each of these.

Will I be taken back to the ship?

Yes, the tour ends at the ship side in Port Chalmers, always in plenty of time to board the ship.

If the ship arrives after 9am will you wait for us?

Our tours are only offered to suit the ship's arrival times so we will wait for the ship to dock before departing, though please ensure you get off the ship to start the tour as soon as possible. Don't wait for all the ship's own tour passengers to depart first, be at the gangway ready to leave as soon as the ship ties up.
